Eating and Drinking
Alderney is very well served for pubs and restaurants and below is a list of our favourites. There are also several places offering take-aways, check out this website for more information www.alderneytakeaway.co.uk.
1. Blonde Hedgehog, Le Huret, St Anne, www.blondehedghog.com Tel: 823230
New in September 2019 after a complete refurbishment, what was once 'The Rose and Crown' is now 'The Blonde Hedgehog' which is firmly established as a favourite of most visitors to the island. This fabulous new hotel and restaurant offers casual dining of a very high standard in surroundings reminiscent of the south of England’s ‘Pig’ hotel chain and proving equally popular. Quirky, comfy and friendly, the BH is already a huge hit with locals and booking in the restaurant is advised.
2. Braye Beach Hotel, Braye, www.brayebeach.com Tel: 824300
Renovated in 2006, the Braye Beach has recently been bought by Handpicked Hotels. It is a modern hotel in a fabulous position close to Braye Beach with a terrace off the restaurant for al fresco dining. Book for a table outside for lunch. The bar also has lovely views and has a terrace right above the beach.
3. The Vaults at Braye Beach Hotel, Braye, Tel: 822632
Opened in 2019, the Vaults, primarily a steakhouse, offers an excellent chateaubriand, many sizes of steaks to suit the smallest or biggest appetites, and some seafood dishes, together with fantastic wines and cocktails in a ground floor restaurant opening out onto an undercover terrace. The Vaults was mostly closed during the pandemic but re-opened in January 2022.
4. The Divers, Braye, Tel: 822632
Next door to the Braye Beach and under the same ownership, the Divers has retained its casual, just off the beach feel. A terrace at the rear overlooking the beach gets the sun in the morning until around lunchtime. Great for drinks and cheap and cheerful pub grub.
5. Cantina No 6, Braye St, Harbour Tel: 824063
Probably the island’s favourite place to eat! Opened in 2015, this bistro-style bar and restaurant has quickly become a firm favourite with locals and holidaymakers. Sadly the wonderful wine bar Bacchus in Victoria Street has closed but 'Bar Bacchus' is due to reappear downstairs at Cantina No 6, opening March 2024. Booking essential to avoid disappointment.
6. The Campania, High St, St Anne, Tel: 822653
A long established pub which changed ownership in recent years, ‘The Camp’ offers wholesome cooking and serves great value classic bar meals both lunchtimes and evenings – very popular with locals so it is adviseable to book ahead. There is a pool table, darts board and a sunny sheltered garden. Karaoke on Sundays is very popular!
7. Braye Chippy, Braye Harbour, Tel: 823475 (from 5pm, check for opening days and times)
Firm local favourite for eating in and taking away - great value fish and chips and some veggie options. Booking is essential to eat inside on Fridays and Saturdays. Otherwise take a warm jacket and sit outside to enjoy the sunset and the view over the Inner Harbour. Since February 2023 under the management of Matin from Nellie Gray's.
9. The Marais Hall Pub, Marais Square, Tel: 822683
Another favourite of the locals, the Marais does great fish and chips, steaks, fish pies, fish soups and more in a real old-style pub environment (best chips on the island!).
10. Nellie Grays Indian Restaurant, Victoria Street, Tel: 823333
People come back to the island especially to come to Nellie Grays - you will see why if you like indian food. Booking always a good idea.
11. Georgian House Hotel & Restaurant, Victoria Street, Tel: 822471
An old established favourite with a lovely garden at the rear. You can have coffee here, drinks, bar snacks or restaurant meals. Emphasis is on good and friendly service. Live music is a regular occurrence during summer.
12. Mai Thai, Le Val, Tel: 824940
A very good thai restaurant, also good for cocktails at the bar.
13. The Coronation pub, The High Street, Tel: 822630
Probably the oldest and most “local” of all the island’s pubs, still with a “shove ha’penny” board!
14. Jack’s, Victoria Street, Tel: 823933 (daytime only)
A very popular cafe with outside seating in the middle of town - good for coffee, cakes and lunches. Now also doing evening meals Tuesday to Saturday, it is adviseable to book in advance.
15. The Old Barn, Longis Bay, Tel: 822537
The local for Les Pourciaux Cottage, just across the beach. Lovely sheltered garden for al fresco dining. Serving lunch every day. Check with the restaurant about dinners. Excellent off-license offering all the usual wines and beers etc., plus some delicious deli-style goodies.

Popular hang-out above the Inner Harbour serving Smoothies, burgers (local produce), bacon butties etc
17. Moorings, Braye Beach
Popular beach-side spot under same ownership of the Georgian House in town, which generally opens from May to September – varied menu including pizzas and other goodies on the sunny terrace. Lots of live music during the summer months.
18. Sal's Pizzeria at Saye Beach Camping, Tel 822556
Sal's pizzeria at the campsite (approx 15 min walk from Les Pourciaux Cottage) is eating al fresco at the camp site cafe (take a jacket in case of cool evenings). Sal offers pizzas, burgers, pasta (delicious lasagne!) and a children's menu. Generally open 5-8pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (check for more days at peak times).
19. Le Pesked at the Harbour Lights, Newtown, Tel: 823841
Moved from Victoria Street a few years ago, Pesked offers traditional French cooking in a bistro-style setting. Great terrace at the rear giving views over the bay.
20. Quarterdeck, Inner Harbour, Tel: 07781 139217
Opened in 2022 in a great location overlooking the Inner Harbour and serves fish, seafood and steaks, with an outside deck area. QD Closed for the winter and is hopefully re-opening with a new chef in Spring/Summer 2024.
